International Women’s Day: GMWU National Women’s Committee Chairperson Calls for Transformative Leadership

Sister Florence E. Nkrumah, Chairperson of the National Women’s Committee of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU-TUC), called for a transformative leadership during the Union’s International Women’s Day engagement with female students of the Girls in Science and Technology (GIST) programme at the University of Mines and Technology.

In her remarks, Sister Nkrumah emphatically affirmed that women’s rights are indivisible from universal human rights, grounded in the principles of dignity, equality, and justice. She urged the young women—many of whom aspire to professional careers in the mining sector and STEM disciplines—to reject any diminution of these rights and to emerge as deliberate architects of societal progress.

Expressing profound appreciation for the collaborative initiative, Sister Nkrumah congratulated the participants on their determination to enter a historically male-dominated industry. She exhorted them to recognise their agency not merely as recipients of opportunity, but as active drivers of change—within their households, communities, workplaces, and the broader national landscape.

“The struggle for gender equity is inseparable from the wider fight for workers’ dignity and fair conditions,” she stated. “You are called to lead that transformation, supported by the organised strength of your union and the solidarity of women across generations.”

Through this focused engagement, the National Women’s Committee reaffirmed the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union’s institutional commitment to eliminating gender-based discrimination, securing safe and equitable workplaces, and cultivating the confidence and competence of women and girls to assume leadership roles across the extractive industries and related fields.
