The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union was established in June 1944 for the purpose of bringing together workers in the extractive industry in Ghana and beyond. The key functions of the Union include, but are not limited to, collective bargaining, advocacy, and campaigns, research and planning, training and education, organizing and recruitment, conflict resolution among others. As of 2017, the membership of the Union stood at 14,843, which included both the Branch and Professional & Managerial Staff Union members.

The Union wants to ensure that even in the context of rapid change, it is still able to promote and protect the rights and interests of its members. It has thus developed this Strategic Plan, which sets forth how it intends to achieve its mission in the next five years. The Strategy begins with a contextual analysis of the key issues and trends within the sector.
